Specifically, "nanoscale" implies working in the range of nanometers or Angstroms, an impressive trick that used to be impossible to do. It is now typically done with advanced tools, such as the STM.

When talking about nanoscale devices or nanotechnology, you're usually referring to looking at or manipulating individual atoms.
