An off-hand way to describe a four cylinder engine. The 'banger' part refers to the explosions that happen inside an engine. Can be taken as an insult if you want, but generally it's just a way to describe your average run-of-the-mill 4 cylinder engine, and it not usually meant in a derogatory fashion.
