Korean term for a diversified conglomerate operating in many industries at once, a la the Japanese keiretsu concept. The first and foremost of the chaebol was Hyundai, a shipbuilding and automobile company that expanded into other fields (electronics, cranes, etc.) in order to manufacture all of its own components. Hyundai's example inspired other companies like Samsung and Daewoo to do the same thing.
