The sport of paddling a
kayak in
whitewater. The advantage of a
kayak is that you can right yourself if you flip over. Successfully righting yourself and your kayak after an unintentional capsize is known as a
combat roll.
Roll is short for
eskimo roll, the method you use to un-flip yourself. If you don't have a good roll, you shouldn't paddle whitewater above
class II because you will
swim a lot. Swimming in
class III and above whitewater can be dangerous. Whitewater Kayakers all wear
PFD's,
sprayskirts, and helmets (unless they're really
stupid). Many kayakers like to wear
noseclips to avoid getting
nasal enemas. Whitewater is usually cold, so
wet suits,
paddling jackets and
drytops are often worn as well.
