Area on the west bank of the Jordan river (hence the name) between the countries of Israel and Jordan. Occupied by Israel since 1967; the population is about 83% Palestinian but there have been many Jewish settlers entering the area as well. Under mid-1990s accords, the area, like the Gaza Strip, is supposed to have Israeli troops withdrawn and local government by Palestinians implemented.
