| Sebaceous glands are found all over the skin, except the palms and feet, and are normally found adjacent to hair follicles. They produce Sebum, an antifungal oil made up of fats, cholesterol, Wax esters, protein and salts that help keep the skin clean, hydrated and soft. Sebum also keeps your hair supple.
When excess Sebum collects in the Sebaceous glands you get a pimple and once the Sebum is oxidized it changes color and turns into a black head. The larger Sebaceous glands are found on the face, chest and neck and they increase production of Sebum during adolescence and are one of the main causes of acne. |
