A small and beautiful town northwest of Siena in Tuscany, Italy. Best known for the several large towers emerging from within its walls.
The view approaching San Gimignano is quite breath-taking. Aside from the movingly beautiful Tuscan landscapes which surround it, the town looks like a brick red miniature Manhattan, with around fourteen towers interrupting the horizon.
At the height of its tower building times, San Gimignano apparently had over sixty of them, until the Mayor at the time built the largest one and forbid the building of any more.
A visit is definitely recommended if you are in the area, since the views are incredible, the wine is good, and the people are friendly. There are also some small art galleries with local artists working in them, a very pictureque central square and a shady walled garden. |
