1) Rochefort

Belgian town on the Lomme river, 45 km SE of Namur. Known for its marble quarry, which has a characteristic red marble, and for its brewery, the St. Rémy monastery, 2 km from Rochefort.

Population (1992): 11,000.

2) Rochefort

French town on the Charente river, 17 km upstream from where the Charente runs into the Atlantic Ocean. Made a naval base in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert (minister to King Louis XIV of France), Rochefort was an active naval port until the early 20th century.

Population (1990): 36,000.
