Term used to describe a Usenet or discussion group post that in no way reflects what the actual subject matter of the thread is.

Off topic posts to discussions are frowned upon unless prefixed by the words "Slightly off topic but...", in which case it is acceptable to start talking about elephant dung in the middle of a discussion on Linux kernel releases.
