  • During prohibition, they were indeed a speakeasy, serving beer in the basement. That's also the key to their claim to be the oldest saloon. Thy're not the oldest, but they are the oldest continuously operating. That claim is disputed by Pete's Tavern and the Bridge Cafe, which both also claim to be the oldest continously operating bar.
