Was a young pianist in the Farmer-Golson Jazztet in the 50's; later gained worldwide fame in the John Coltrane Quartet - his use of quartal harmony provided a loose, tonally ambiguous backdrop to Trane's flights. His 70's bands kept the faith in the face of that era's pseudo-jazz commercialism; since then, he has exploited the neo-con trends of The Marsalis Age. |
