I am telling the absolute truth, as far as I know. It may really be an urban legend (depending on what's being told), but generally it's something too fantastic to believe. Example conversation:

"Man, I heard that RMS died of cancer today..."

"You gotta be shitting me!"

"I shit you not."

The second sentence is usually expressed nonverbally, with a surprised or incredulous look.
