I love the smell of napalm in the morning

created by hellfire

(idea) by Albert Herring (8.5 hr) (print)   ?   (I like it!) Wed Jan 24 2001 at 14:22:02

The earliest reference to this line, uttered by a real life US Army officer, is to be found in a long out-of-print book called "Vietnam, Inc." by photojournalist Philip Jones Griffiths, which also provided material used by Coppola in several other scenes in Apocalypse Now.

"Do you smell that? It's napalm, son. Nothing else on the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Y'know, once we had a hail bomb....12 hours....and when it was all over I walked up. We didn't find one of them, not one stinking dink body.

The smell, y'know that gasoline smell, that whole hell.

Smells like........ Victory.

Some day this war's gonna end."

- Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore.

This is probably the most famous quote from Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 masterpiece Apocalypse Now. Kilgore is played by Robert Duval who delivers the speech with perfect clarity to the rest of his platoon while chaos ensues all around them. Shells are falling all around them, yet Kilgore still finds the time to gaze off into some distant point far away to reflect upon days of glory.
