In MS-DOS, the HIMEM.SYS command creates a 64-kilobyte area in memory above the standard 1-megabyte address space, called the High Memory Address (HMA). After the HIMEM.SYS establishes the HMA, the DOS=HIGH statement shifts a large portion of DOS from convention memory into the HMA, releasing more conventional memory for programs. This was especially important for memory-hungry DOS games.
