The Grand Coulee Dam was started in 1933 as a New Deal project, but wasn't completed until 1975. It rises 550 feet above the floor of the Colombia Basin in Washington and spans nearly a mile and is 450 feet thick at its base. The dam is capable of generating up to 6 million kilowatts of electricty. It is open to the public and if you're interested in sticking around, there's a really cheesy laser show at night that's projected onto the Grand Coulee's spillway that compliments the story of the Grand Coulee Dam (Why, I don't know).
