An occasional
avant-garde big band; original nucleus (
1966) was the
Peter Brotzmann Trio and the Schoof/Schlippenbach quintet (a pool that included future
Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit). Alex von Schlippenbach organized it for much of its 20-year existence. Globe Unity gave
composers and improvisors a chance to extend the ideas of
free jazz to the larger palette of the
orchestra. Try their JAPO/
