gpg is a common abbreviation and the name of the executable of GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG), the GNU project cryptography package that does its best to offer strong crypto via non-patented algorithms.
It has been named insidiously, obviously being a pun on the name of its primary competitor, PGP. A clever marketing strategy!
