As I believe it has been mentioned before:
Fry's Electronics is about 10 times worse to its employees than the employees are to the customers.
Case in point: Up until Tuesday of this week, I was working at Fry's Electronics in
Austin, TX in the Video department. My reputation was that of a responsible employee. If something needed to be done, I could get it done in a reasonable amount of time. My co-workers enjoyed me and my work, and all of my immediate
supervisors appreciated me and were great people. So, there is basically no very good reason that I would be immediately terminated with no
due process.
But, I was.
Next time you're in a Fry's store, in the video section, notice the plastic signholders in front of all the TVs. We have those as well. Because of a customer "
opportunity", a poor
euphamism for a complaint, we lost around $2000 dollars because someone moved the sign from a cheap TV to a much more expensive TV. The
assistant store manager's solution to this was to screw down all of the signs to the tables. This was a decent idea, however it caused the immediate problem of having a 6" tall barrier whenever you tried moving a TV. Now, when you're moving a 400 pound TV, any sort of barrier poses both a
logistical problem and a
safety hazard.
Nobody liked that plan. Nobody. None of the sales associates. None of the supervisors. Fry's has an "
open door" policy, meaning I can, at any moment, discuss anything I want to with management. So, I chose to discuss it on the day of the big regional management review. And, I chose to discuss it in a rude manner. Stupid? Yes. Wrong? Probably, but definently not at a level of termination. What his response was, to quote, "If you don't like it, go work someplace else." In a store which prides itself in open communication, this was unacceptable.
So, I went and worked someplace else.
I don't write all of this as a
bitchfest. I'm well past that. I write it to tell all of you, who constantly complain about Fry's customer service, the reason we all are rude as hell to you is because we are being treated like dirt.
The final quote from this situation:
"I'm not going to reverse my decision to fire you. What kind of message would that send to all of the other employees here?"
"A message slightly better than if they knew they were expendable."
