When used in aviation, refers to the lateral support frames in an aircraft. Constructed from metal extrusion formed into a large ring located just inside the fuselage. They occur typically at set intervals along the length of the aircraft. In conjunction with stringers, these constitute the major structural framework of an aircraft.
