Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser

Two famous swords and sorcery heroes created by Fritz Leiber, one of the world's greatest fantasy authors. Fafhrd and The Gray Mouser are two swordsmen from the world of Newhon. Through a number of short stories, novelettes and novels, the two heroes do all the generic swords and sorcery stuff, but in an extraordinary fashion.

All of this sounds like hyperbole, but Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser really is the greatest series of its genre. Most hack and slash stories are very formulaic, and quite boring (IMHO). Somehow Fritz Leiber's stories are different. To even begin to consider yourself educated in fantasy, you have to have read at least one of these stories.

The stories have been compiled into a number of volumes. Mine are out on lone, educating the unfortunate, but titles include Swords of Lankhmar, and a lot of other things starting with Swords.

Not only is the series arguably the best Swords and Sorcery out there, it is also, together with Robert E. Howard's Conan books, what founded the entire subgenre in the first place (Leiber actually coined the term itself). The books are often said to be more "Literary" than other Swords & Sorcery, and for once this might actually be slightly true - Fritz Leiber was originally a Shakespearean actor, and the language of the books is rich and playful, with nice though obviously construed dialogue.

The various books in the Swords series are a must for any Fantasy reader, but they are especially interesting if you are a Dungeons and Dragons aficionado. I played the game before reading the books, and it was an epiphany to me once I got to it - it explains why many elements of the game look the way they do, and what feel Gygax was shooting for - one excellent example is the Rogue class, which, even in 3rd Edition, is constructed basically to replicate the abilities of the Gray Mouser. Several tropes of the game, particularly the ahistoric ones, also originate in the Swords series. The most obvious of these is the (much-maligned by some camps) concept of the Thieves' Guild, which occurs very frequently in D&D, but has little historical basis.

The books are easy and cheap to get ahold of these days, by the way - Gollancz Press has published two softcover omnibuses with all the Swords stories under their Fantasy Masterworks imprint.

Addendum, later: I just recalled a tidbit I failed to mention earlier, namely that the world of Fafhrd's and the Mouser's adventurous bungling, Nehwon, is "Nowhen" backwards, intended to mean "never, anywhere". (2002-12-05)
