Ernst Jünger, 1895 - 1998. Right wing German author, writer of The Storm of Steel, The Glass Bees, and On the Marble Cliffs. After WWI, he was the youngest soldier ever to receive Germany's highest military award.
He was not associated with the Nazis, although Adolf Hitler was one of his fans. On the other hand, so was Albert Hofmann, inventor of LSD.
His novels are philosophical, and show a preoccupation with military life and technology, which he seems to be fascinated by, and afraid of.
The Glass Bees was recently republished by New York Review Books, publishing arm of the New York Review of Books, with an introduction by cyberpunk windbag Bruce Sterling, who gets a lot more credit for writing his introduction than do Louise Bogan and Elizabeth Mayer for their excellent translation from the German. It is his best known novel, and thought to be prophetic of today's technological and social climate.
