Desk Accessory, a small single-purpose program from the early days of the Mac OS. DA's were embedded into the Apple Menu by the notorious Font/DA Mover, and played a similar role to that of applets in the GNOME desktop model. Popular DAs were Calculator and Chooser, Note Pad and Scrapbook. Needless to say, this Apple Computer technology was wildly innovative for it's time (early to mid 1980s). DA's became regular apps with the launch of System 7.0.

DA also stands for Department of the Army.  It is with these two letters that the department usually refers to itself in its publications.
