There are many
theories as to why the
Chicago White Sox are not as popular as the
Chicago Cubs. Mine is as follows. One of the owners of the
White Sox, Eddie Einhorn, made his fortune in
cable television. Because of him, the
White Sox signed a TV deal with SportsVision, before cable was widely available. The
Cubs remained on
WGN, which was a local channel. Therefore, it was much easier to watch a
Cubs game than a
White Sox game. In addition to this, as cable increased in popularity,
WGN was picked up by many cable providers across the
United States. The Cubs became one of America's teams (along with the
Atlanta Braves who play on TBS) and the White Sox retained a small but
loyal following.
