Small town on the outskirts of Baltimore city, in Baltimore County, Maryland. The town came about around 1810 when Charles Carroll (the longest living signer of the Declaration of Independence), commissioned his son-in-law Richard Caton to develop a large area of land about seven miles from Baltimore bordering the newly named Frederick Turnpike, which had become the major road running from the city of Baltimore out to the west. Richard Caton then developed the land into the beginnings of a true village, which then naturally came to be known as 'Catonville' and then ultimately as Catonsville sometime around 1830.
