The Veterans Memorial Highway, Interstate 476, west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; also known as the Mid-County Expressway, since it slices through the middle of Delaware County. The term "blue route" originates from the colours of the lines on the planning maps used to indicate proposed alignments for the new highway; obviously enough, the blue line was chosen. Part of the (un)popularity of this highway comes from the raging protests against its construction, as the alignment chosen ran through wetlands, causing the project to be delayed for a long time. The first section to be completed was opened in 1980; the highway as a whole wasn't finished until 1991. This road had been planned since the 1950's.
This highway runs from Chester, at Interstate 95, to Plymouth Meeting, where it meets the Pennsylvania Turnpike and its Northeast Extension. |
