The first (and best)
US television newsmagazine, founded by
CBS News' Don Hewitt in
1968 (he continues to run the ship). As full-length
documentaries were becoming less and less a factor on
prime-time TV, this format became the best compromise - three extended-length
news stories in one
hour. They invented the "ambush
interview", in which
Mike Wallace and crew would show up to ask a
question or two to some miscreant. Always call your
lawyer before talking.
