Market liberalism, a.k.a. classical liberalism and libertarianism, has its origins in classical Greek rationalism and Enlightenment thought and emphasizes the primacy of human rights in social relationships. Market liberalism views the protection of these rights as the sole legitimate role of government. Locke summarized in a famous phrase these rights: the rights to life, liberty and property.
