Note that it wasn't until 1937 that zippers were largely embraced as a method of securing men's trousers. Apparently, it was French fashion designers (who else) who first decided that putting sharp interlocking metal teeth in the direct vicinity of the most vulnerable area of male anatomy was a perfectly reasonable and fashionable idea.
