Somatic death, often referred to as clinical death, is characterized by cessation of cardiac and respiratory activity. Revival from this state is possible with external stimuli, most commonly CPR. Generally, brain death occurrs around six minutes after the onset of somatic death; but cases of prolonged somatic death, brought on by particularly astronomical periods beneath water, have been publicized.
Notably, reported cases of near-death experiences (whether spiritual epiphanies or the erratic activities of a dying mind is subjective) are believed to be experienced during somatic death.
