Owner of the most commonly found shell on all beaches, the slipper snail is also the holder of a rather odd record: the longest
daisy chain in the
animal kingdom. Scientifically named
Crepidula fornicata for a good reason, all slipper snails begin life as males. When a snail reaches
sexual maturity, it attaches itself to an object, and performs an
impromptu sex change on itself, becoming female. Soon, another male snail comes along, mates with the first one, and stays mounted on the first one for the rest of its life. Then, it too becomes female, and the chain continues. Along comes a third snail, and it continues the chain. Chains of up to 14 snails have been found.
