A data communications "link", usually a set of wires, which transmits and/or receives data one bit at a time. See also serial port; contrast with parallel port and parallel data transfer. Includes synchronous and asynchronous types. RS-232 and current loop are a couple of possible implementations of this idea, but there are others as well.
