The Rolling Hitch (also known as the Magnus hitch or Magner's hitch) is commonly used to attach two ropes together, or one rope to another object. When there is no tension on the part of the rope labeled, PULL, the knot can easily be slid up and down the other rope. Care should be taken to ensure that tension is only applied parallel to the other rope - perpendicular tension will cause the knot to spill. Because parallel tension will not cause the hitch to loosen, the knot can also be used for pulling objects such as logs.
If this rope is looped around and the rolling hitch is tied to itself, it forms an adjustable loop known as the Tautline Hitch. It is also similar to the Clove Hitch; however the extra turn allows it to hold a better grip on whatever it is tied to.
