A large format camera that was formerly used by press photographers for crime scene pictures and celebrity pictures.
It was usually a folding design, normally fitted with a large bulbflash. No light meter (of course!), focusing was normally done on a distance scale, and film was in sheet form, or roll form (possibly using an adapter back).
It is the kind of camera that you see in old movies in the hands of the intrusive newsman. Probably the most famous user of press cameras was Weegee (real name: Artur Fellig).
Used press cameras can still be found today, and they are still quite usable. Graflex and Crown Graphics are probably the most famous brands - Tachihara still makes a press camera. They do not completely substitute a studio view camera, because of their limited movements.
