In
woodworking, a cross cut is one that is made perpendicular to the
grain of the wood. Compare with
rip cut. A
crosscut saw is a
handsaw designed with a short
blade and a
stiffened back to prevent buckling as it is pushed across the grain. With a power
radial arm saw, cross cuts are generally performed by drawing the spinning blade across the
width of the
board, which is held in place against a
fence.
