Tobacco's
genetic makeup which includes between 25 and 50 thousand
genes. It is being researched now at
North Carolina State University (thanks in large part to a grant from
Philip Morris). They hope to have it mapped by 2007. Since
tobacco is related to
peppers,
potatoes, and
tomatoes (that's the family
Solanaceae, if you're keeping score at home), so this is seen as an important foundational effort in mapping
the vegetable kingdom. And it is hoped that it will help efforts to breed out some of the
harmful effects of
tobacco products.
