The real bridge is in
Kanchanaburi,
Thailand. It is made of black iron and was brought from
Java by the Japanese during
World War II and reassembled under Japanese supervision by
Allied POWs. It is part of what was known as the "Death Railway" linking Thailand with
Burma (now
Myanmar). The bridge was the target of frequent
Allied bombing raids during the war, and was rebuilt after the war ended. The curved spans of the bridge are original, and the whole area has become a major
tourist attraction and site of an annual sound and light show which must terrify any who remember the real bombing.
