A song of loss, resonating and floating in that "singing in the restroom" echoey ambience that doo-wop groups loved. Where James Brown gave you, with similar material back then, raw emotion, Southern bluesy screams and moans punctuating his cries of hurt as he spilled his guts for your dining and dancing pleasure, Anthony gave you Northern Urbane, singing his song of hurt with a poker face and maybe the hint of a tear in the corner of his eye. His voice may have sounded younger than his eighteen
years, but scratch the surface of the sound, and you heard the pain of an old man who'd been carrying the hurt for eighteen years.
This was the group's first 45. They created a masterpiece. How do you top that? They never really did.
