Strictly speaking, a type of guitar made by
Fender but these days refers to any guitar of similar shape and sound. Commonly abbreviated to "strat". A stratocaster was the guitar of choice for
Jimi Hendrix,
Eric Clapton and
Stevie Ray Vaughan. Many smaller companies (such as
legend produce cheap, horrible strats made with plywood bodies as strats are considered a standard, and are the guitars most non-guitarists immediately think of when thinking of
electric guitars. Strats typically have two tone knobs and a volume knob, a 5-way pickup selector switch , two single coil pickups and a humbucker or high-output single coil pickup in the bridge position.
