Capt. Oliver Harmon "Spearchucker" Jones
Character in the Robert Altman film M*A*S*H and the novel of the same name by Richard Hooker on which the film was based. Also appeared in the M*A*S*H television series for several episodes before being dropped... official explanation being that there were no African American doctors assigned to MASH units during the Korean War.
"Spearchucker" Jones is brought in by the MASH 4077 as a ringer for a football game, as he played for the Philadelphia Eagles for a season before being drafted into the Army as a doctor. He had a specialty in neurosurgery and was a surgical resident playing semi-pro ball before his season with the Eagles.
The character's name was an obvious joke on racial stereotypes at the time. When Colonel Henry Blake askes if Captain Jones minds if he calls him "Spearchucker," Jones doesn't seem to understand why it would be a problem. When asked how he got the name, Spearchucker responds "I used to throw the javelin."
