Disney part-animation/part live-action movie, based on Joel Chandler Harris's collections of Uncle Remus stories. It's the source of the song "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah," which is about the only clip from it that Disney will allow to be shown in the U.S.; the movie has not been released on video or rereleased to theaters because of concerns about its portrayal of the black narrator Uncle Remus being offensive to modern watchers. However, this hasn't stopped Disney from basing the Splash Mountain ride on the animated part of the movie, or offering picture books of the stories (with the Southern dialect somewhat toned down) with illustrations of the animated animal characters.

Koreykruse offered a way for American viewers to see the whole thing for themselves: "I purchased a copy of this video in PAL format from a website located in England. I had a video store make me a regular VHS tape from it. All for about $35."

A 1946 Disney movie combining animation with live action. Directed by Wilfred Jackson and written by Joel Chandler Harris (based on his book) and Dalton S. Reymond, the movie told the story of a boy who has gone to live on a plantation in the Old South. He's not happy there, and his family is falling apart. To pass the time, he listens to stories about Brer Rabbit told by Uncle Remus (played by James Baskett, who also provided the voice of Brer Fox). It's probably best known for its Oscar-winning song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah".

It's not available in the United States because some people say it's racist. I couldn't tell ya for sure--I saw it when I was a kid, and I liked it then--but I haven't seen it since. Of course, you can get "The Birth of a Nation" on video...
