Process control initialization (init) level 1, otherwise known as single user mode. A run-level mode on unix systems where as few services as possible are run to allow the system administrator preliminary access to a machine before all disks have been mounted. Single user mode is necessiary when running fsck on secondary (non-root) partitions, since they require the system have them unmounted at time of repair.
