| The older tour guides, aka Historic Interpreters, at Mark Twain's House in Hartford, would simply refer to Twain as "Sam". Sam would write letters, and depending on who they were written to, he would either sign them as "Mark Twain" or simply "Sam" or "SLC". I think our calling him Sam on our tours was a reflection of our wish to have been one of those people who recieved a letter signed "Sam". Every night I pulled down the shades, turned off the dim lights, and I would always finish with "Goodnight, Sam." Most of the people who are at the House now call him "Twain". |
