Career as a playwrite began in 1964 New York at the Theater Genesis production of Cowboys and The Rock Garden. His first full-length play--La Turista won an Obie in 1967. He spent four years in London, where his personal idea of America became more clear to him--"I have American scars on my brain... The more distant you are from it, the more the implications of what you grew up with start to emerge." He has also been the resident playwrite of the Magic Theater in San Francisco, wrote the screenplay for Paris, Texas, and was nominated for an academy award for his portrayal of Chuck Yeger in The Right Stuff.
