A number of early (and some current) Japanese RPGs had characters in SD mode in overhead view; Pocket Fighters is an arcade game featuring SD versions of characters from other games. SD versions sometimes provide comic relief in otherwise serious works, and sometimes are a mainstay of the flow of the story. Because of their cuteness and relatively simple design, SD characters are popular on goods and toys.
