A binary system, in the novel of the same name by Don DeLillo. A message arrives from this star, or at least the direction of this star. Billy Twillig, boy genius, is called to Field Experiment Number One to help analyze the message. And things get very weird. It's a mixture of science fiction and DeLillo's usual insightful postmodern ramblings. I finished reading it last night, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. Not as good as Underworld, and probably not as good as White Noise though that was the first DeLillo I read so it's hard to compare in retrospect. On the other hand, this book has a lot of intriguing ideas, and deals somewhat better with science than most fiction that addresses it. There's a fairly clear distinction between what is made up for the novel and what is actually believed. Generally I would recommend you read it, if you have a bit of free time. But if you've never read a DeLillo novel before, start with White Noise or Libra. |
