This call to action was credited to Mary Elizabeth Lease, a popular orator for the People's Party in the 1890s. It was said that during the election of 1890, this was her personal challenge to American farmers. She claimed that she never actually uttered those words, that a newspaper made up that bit, but she also noted that it "was a good bit of advice."
