Proposition 22

Even his own son, David Knight, is against it. (Of course, David's also gay, and he also tells many stories of his father's stubborn refusal to see anything outside of his own narrow-minded conception of how the world should be, even stopping talking to his own brother because his brother contracted AIDS.) And he's come out publically against it, several times, in the Los Angeles Times.

Of course, the only reason why anything like this -could- become law is because the misguided Federal Government passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Every election since then, the Honorable Mister Knight has sought to make it illegal in California for anything outside of his narrow worldview to occur.

Please, help us stop Proposition 22. It goes to the ballot in a week, March 7th of 2000.

Guess what?

Prop 22 passed on March 7, 2000.

Hmm. That really sucks for Californians gay and straight alike.

Possibly worse was proposition 21 which also passed.

Here is the full text of the thing:

PROPOSED LAW (make that law

SECTION 1. This act may be cited as the "California Defense of Marriage Act."

SECTION 2. Section 308.5 is added to the Family Code, to read:

308.5. Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

Here is an example of someone who supported the measure from nytimes:

"Probably it's my small town upbringing and the fact that I've been going to church all my life," said Lewis Cain of Sacramento, who voted for Proposition 22. "It just seemed like the right thing to do."

Good for him. It is the good thinkers who will lead this nation to freedom.

although this proposition has passed, hopefully the arguments in this essay will be useful for future debates.
