Point of Rocks, Maryland is located along the Potomac River in Frederick County. It was named for a rock outcropping on a cliff along the river. Population in 1984 was about 750. The town was the site of a Civil War skirmish in 1864 when Lt. Col. John Mosby led an attack on a Union garrison in the town. The C & O Canal Towpath runs through Point Of Rocks, as does the MARC train. The picturesque brick railroad station in the center of town was built in 1871. Citizens in Point Of Rocks are concerned with disruptions to their town such as the widening of Route 15 and a proposed power plant. Flooding from the Potomac River is another problem, and many houses near the river are being acquired by the government and torn down due to major flooding in 1994 and 1996. It's a quiet town, I drive through it every day on my commute to work. A former Texaco gas station in town has a sign out front that says "Maryland Fried Chicken". The sign inexplicably has pictures of a slice of pizza and a hoagie on it. |
