Metal blade that is hammered into a crack in the rock. The end of the blade has a hole through which a crab is clipped. Damages the rock somewhat but utilises a natural weakness in the rock. Early climbers had little else to climb with .Also known as pegs. Hammered in with a peg/piton hammer
