Paul Neil Milne Johnstone is the poet referred to in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams as the worst poet ever. The original radio play used his real name, but he was upset at the use of his address (only amused, incidentally, by being called the worst poet in the galaxy), so the name was changed to Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings. The actual poem in question here is this:
The dead swans lay in the stagnant pool.
They lay. They rotted. They turned
Around occassionally.
Bits of flesh dropped off them from
Time to time.
And sank into the pool's mire.
They also smelt a great deal.
Adams and Johnstone actually attended Brentwood School in Essex together, and they both received scholarships to the University of Cambridge. Johnstone passed away in April 2004 of pancreatic failure. |
